In light of the recent political climate in America, New Boone has decided to launch an emergency free and open to the public class series called How to Survive. This is going to run twice a week, for seven weeks. In fourteen “classes” leading up to Inauguration Day we will explore themes of democracy, healing, and unity. These 30-60 minute classes will take place on Monday and Wednesday from approximately 7-8pm. We will rely on volunteer teachers from our community to instruct creative and constructive means of coping. We hope to provide a safe space which activates the local community to support and participate in peaceful recalibration and resistance. Mark your calendar for any and all classes you feel would be useful for you.
Post election night we felt defeated. After 24 hours of being sad, Darragh and Leah, as well as some other close friends and collaborators, met and started to discuss the urgency of taking action. We wanted to continue to move through the coping process by providing and contributing to constructive community-based resources. By taking action we are able to help each other combat the hateful and frightening events which have followed (and been legitimized by) the current President elect. We are prioritizing improved lines of communication between polarized groups. It is important for us to uphold the democratic process, we look at this series as a companion to the current protest movement. We need to be self motivating in order to combat the hate speech, and rely on one another to build our community’s into safe spaces.
